Humpback whales are commonly seen in the waters off British Columbia, Canada where they spend the summer feeding. This image was taken during a sea kayak expedition in August near Blackfish Sound, BC. As we rounded a corner in our kayaks, we encountered this magnificent humpback lunge feeding. The whale gave us this "tail wave" as it dove right beneath our kayaks!! A truly amazing experience.
In late August, the sunflower fields bloom. It is a wonderful opportunity to photograph insects of many kinds, especially bees. This particular morning they were everywhere, flying from flower to flower coated in pollen.

This cinnamon colored black bear cub was taking a peaceful nap when I was lucky enough to capture this frame. His ears reminded me of the famous Star Wars character Yoda, and so it became "Yoda Bear".
Several years ago, ironically on my birthday, I sat alone atop a rock ledge in Voyageurs National Park, intending to capture star trails over Lake Kabetogama. It was eerily calm and quiet. As I prepared for my desired composition, the sky suddenly erupted into a magnificent display of dancing color! It was the Aurora Borealis! Vivid purples, greens and magentas filled the night sky. I sat in awe for hours, capturing as many images as I could. It was truly a spiritual experience and it was that experience that motivates me to share my work with others."
